Yaris: The platform to Toyota’s success

It’s fairly safe to say that without the intervention of Covid-19, Toyota would be heralding a new name at the top of its WRC hit list. When Sébastien Ogier won Rally Guanajuato Mexico in March, he scored the Japanese manufacturer’s 15th victory with the car, a result that brought the Yaris within one more success of equalling the Celica Turbo 4WD. But it was even more impressive when you consider the Yaris was the first World Rally Car built by Tommi Mäkinen’s Puuppola-based squad. From that day forward, the Yaris’ upbringing on fast Finnish roads was evident. But it’s the speed where the Yaris scores highest, winning 46 and leading 58 per cent of the stages in the 2019 championship. And, what’s even better for rally fans, is the news of the GR Yaris road car. The GR Yaris is certain to cement the Yaris WRC’s appeal among fans for years to come.
