‘We need to see how the race pans out’: Toto Wolff drops Sprint team orders hint after Valtteri Bottas unexpectedly beat Lewis Hamilton in qualifying… with the seven-time world champion’s title battle with Max Verstappen on a knife edge

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff hinted that he would tell Valtteri Bottas to move aside to let Lewis Hamilton win Sunday’s Sprint race at Monza. Hamilton lies three points behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who qualified third fastest. There are three points on offer to the winner of the 18-lap tear around the 3.6-mile circuit, with two points for second place and one for third. The sense in hoovering up every scrap is underlined by the fact Hamilton has both lost and won a championship by a single point, in 2007 and 2008 respectively. Hamilton was quickest in Q1 and Q2 before Bottas produced his unexpected burst of pace.
