Verstappen wins Mexican F1 GP with Lewis Hamilton second after red flag

The world champion was largely unchallenged at the front of the field in a race that was stopped midway through after Haas’s Kevin Magnussen suffered a high speed crash but was unhurt. Lewis Hamilton claimed second for Mercedes, with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in third and fourth for Ferrari. Verstappen took the lead off the start from third on the grid at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, passing both the Ferraris on the drag to turn one and once out front had the pace to lead with complete control, enjoying a 14-second lead at the flag. He maintained his place after the restart caused by Magnussen’s accident and while Hamilton and Mercedes pulled off a very well-executed race to take second, they could not come close to Verstappen. Verstappen may have been marginally beaten by both Ferraris in qualifying but once more the Red Bull’s race pace advantage was decisive. Pérez going out has reinvigorated Hamilton’s shot at claiming second in the drivers’ championship.
