Newgarden Roars to Top before Rain Dampens Indy Open Test

Josef Newgarden must like the view from the top at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as he was fastest in the opening two hours of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge Open Test on Wednesday. Reigning “500” winner Newgarden turned the fastest lap during the morning session on the 2.5-mile oval, 228.811 mph, in the No. ET, but a delay for light rain has engines quiet at 12:20 p.m. Track drying is underway, and ROP and refresher tests will continue when the surface is dry. The track eventually will be open to all drivers until 6:30 p.m., weather permitting. As of 12:20 p.m., Marco Andretti, Pietro Fittipaldi and Katherine Legge completed their refresher tests.
