Valtteri Bottas claims pole at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix with Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton behind him – by 0.097 seconds – and Max Verstappen in third after thrilling shootout at Imola

Lewis Hamilton was denied a record-extending 98th pole position at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola – by Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas. Valtteri Bottas (left) bumps fists with Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton after pipping him to pole position ahead of Sunday’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola. Bottas was less than a tenth quicker than Hamilton to deny his team-mate a 10th pole this term. In F1’s first return to Imola for the first time since 2006, Hamilton qualified second on the grid. Bottas was again narrowly faster as he wins another battle against Hamilton. Mercedes of course are quickest with no cars on track, with Bottas just ahead of Hamilton. It was actually Bottas quickest after the first session, Hamilton seeing a lap deleted for exceeding track limits.
