Charles Leclerc set the pace in qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix with pole position for Ferrari. Carlos Sainz was second best to seal a one-two for Ferrari with Max Verstappen third for Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton was sixth best, a big improvement on his showing in Imola a fortnight ago but still more almost a second off the pace despite supposed upgrades to his Mercedes – new front and rear wings. Max Verstappen does his best to hide his disappointment. Verstappen slips up in his final run to drop into third between the Ferrari one-two. Verstappen still holds the lead, with Leclerc second, Sainz third and Perez fourth. Verstappen goes sub 1:29 and takes pole with 1:28.991. Verstappen is just under half a second faster Sainz, posting 1:29.202. He’s 1.3 seconds down on leader Verstappen and outside the top 10. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell are out, with the latter posting a first lap just over half a second slower than Verstappen. Max Verstappen has his first qualifying run, along with team-mate Sergio Perez. And he takes the lead, six tenths ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz at 1:30.235. Max Verstappen managed only five timed laps yesterday, which is not what you want coming into a brand new track. Lewis Hamilton was fourth behind Sergio Perez in the sweltering heat.
